Ideology in My Controversy
This controversy involves Hawaiian Natives and
Astronomers all around the world. It is an issue between the people of Hawaii
and Science. Some of the major speakers involved in this debate is Kealoha
Pisciotta who is the president of the activist group of Mauna Kea Ohana. Other
leaders in the controversy involve the supreme court of Hawaii and the leaders
of the TMT project. The economical effect that this telescope could have would
be tremendous for both Hawaii’s community and also the advancement in astronomy
and how we understand our universe. The whole controversy lies on the cultural
aspect of the land they want to build on. Hawaiians have a strong religious
culture, and building on that land is not something they are going to let
happen without a fight. Both groups value each other but still value their own
sides drastically. The Hawaiians main value is religion and culture, that is
why they are standing up for their land. While astronomers value the future and
advancing out knowledge of the universe today. The power differential is more
sided toward the building of the telescope. Their really is no law stopping the
construction of TMT, but they don’t want to do it on bad terms. Both sides do
understand the importance of the other, that is why the controversy is trying
to find a neutral setting. Where both sides see the good in the project. I
believe that both groups on this controversy understand and listen to the
opposites but they both believe in their side more than the other. The
Hawaiians are never going to want
